Managing Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal emotion that all of us will experience at some point in life. It is part of our warning system that something could be wrong – without anxiety we would all be reckless.

When we sense danger certain changes happen in our body to help us to cope. Our heart starts to beat a little faster and we tend to start breathing more rapidly. This can lead to our flight, fight or freeze response – which is how we tend to react to a perceived threat.

When this happens occasionally because we have encountered an anxiety provoking moment that is OK. We calm down from this once the event is over and manage to get back on with life again.

But when you suffer with anxiety you can feel as if you are in this heightened mode all the time. This starts to have an impact on our physical health as well as our mental health. Being on constantly high alert is mentally draining and it will start to impact our relationships and daily life.

It is when this happens that anxiety has become a problem, and not just a normal emotion that is felt in certain situations. Your anxiety has become overwhelming and it is getting in the way of life.

As a counsellor I work a lot with people who suffer from anxiety. I help people to find better ways to manage their anxious thoughts. I also give people strategies which they can use themselves to help to manage the physical effects of anxiety. There are also techniques available which can help you if you feel that you are suffering from a panic attack.

But I also believe that it is important to help people to find the root of their anxiety – when did it first start, what triggered it in the first place? By doing this clients can find ways to deal with this initial trigger which will then help them to feel less anxious going forward.

For some of you who read this you will recognise yourselves – you would say that anxiety has been a problem for you for a long time. For others you may be experiencing a real sense of anxiety for the first time – due to Covid-19. Life has totally changed in recent weeks, all the things we took for granted we can no longer do. Walking down your street, going to the shops – have all suddenly become stressful, anxiety provoking occasions.

Whichever group you fall into counselling can help you at this present time. If you would like to talk to me to see how I can help you please check out my website and call me or email me.
